I am an Associate Professor of Economics and Education at Columbia University's graduate school of education, Teachers College. I work in the fields of development and applied microeconomics. Most of my research has to do with the economics of education in the developing world.

At Columbia I am affiliated with the Center for Development Economics and PolicyCommittee on the Economics of Education, and Population Research Center.

In the wider world, I am a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Faculty Affiliate at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (also known as J-PAL), Research Fellow at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics, and co-founder of the MiiE Lab at the University of Chicago.

My last name is pronounced EH-blee; put differently, it sounds just like the last two syllables of “incredibly.”

Here’s a link to my CV. You can also find me on bluesky and see my old twitter posts here: @alexeble. My email address is eble@tc.columbia.edu

I went up for tenure in Fall 2022, and was awarded tenure in 2023 (woohoo!!) - here’s a link to my research statement where I describe my work to date and plans for the future.
